Today is a national holiday in Grenada. I often don't find out its a holiday until the day before and this proved to be true again with Whit Monday. But of course i will take the free day away from work.
The holiday is Whitsuntide Monday, it represents Pentecost (Whitsuntide) which is a major festival in the Christian Church. It is celebrated on the Sunday which falls on the 50th day after the Easter festival. Since Grenada is a predominately Catholic country that day is observed as a public holiday.
Often times Grenadians have "harvests" on Whit Monday, usually organized by a Catholic Church in the village. They will set up tents and have food vendors, kids games and lots of music and alcohol. One of the biggest things i love about Grenadian culture is that they LOVE to celebrate anything. Its fellowship they say and it brings their people closer together. During these celebrations there is no talk of work deadlines or politics, they are simply there to enjoy each others company and celebrate.
